Taking its departure from New York’s Judson Dance Theater program and its founding members, Lost Without Your Rhythm examines diverse types of bodily movement—graceful as well as inelegant and of the everyday. The exhibition’s celebration of the ordinary is a central defining element of the avant-garde that emerged in the 1960s and to which these members subscribed. Juxtaposing this historical lineage with the work of contemporary artists, the show illuminates concerns that remain at the forefront of artistic production today.
Framing the body as weighted material, the works in the exhibition attempt to bridge the gap between the body of the performer and that of the viewer. Together, they present unemotional, nontechnical gestures and objects that deny any prescribed ordered time and appeal to our inherent sense of motion. Including work by Helena Almeida, Simone Forti, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, EJ Hill, Bruce Nauman, B. Ingrid Olson, Yvonne Rainer, and Oscar Tuazon, Lost Without Your Rhythm engages visitors by bringing forth experiences that implicate and provoke the body toward action.
