YUI YAEGASHI

Overview

While at a distance Yaegashi’s small, unassuming works display a quiet simplicity, close attention reveals surprisingly complex patterning and layers of detail. Monochrome surfaces are constructions of meticulously woven brushstrokes, while in other compositions, traces of previous gestures are glimpsed beneath deliberate strokes of colour applied one on top of another. Yaegashi's refined handling of paint and palette create vibrant tensions between control and chance, precision and unexpected moments of beauty, compelling us to look again, and then again, more closely.

Yui Yaegashi was born in Chiba, Japan and currently lives and works in Tokyo. She received her BA from Tokyo Zokei University’s Department of Painting (2009), and her MFA from Tokyo Zokei University’s Graduate School of Art and Design (2011). Her work has recently been shown in The way of painting at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, and in solo exhibitions at Misako & Rosen, Tokyo; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; and Midway Contemporary, Minneapolis.
