Ragnar Kjartansson: This Must Be the Place: Bergen Airport, Bergen, Norway

17 August 2017

Ragnar Kjartansson's permanent installation at Bergen Airport, This Must Be The Place, was installed on occasion of the opening of the airport's new terminal in August 2017.  The artwork consists of six luminous yellow letters and a question mark, mounted right opposite the new flight terminal. The letters, which are 5.5 meters high and weigh 2.5 tons each, spell out BERGEN?, referring to the city on Norway’s southwestern coast.

The artwork encourages a sense of curiosity and open-mindedness towards the surroundings, and it places a question mark over what we think we know. This Must Be the Place embraces humour, excitement and wonder, expectations and dreams. The artist does not seek to provide textbook answers, instead pointing to the universal human experience of being new to a place. Bergen is the place – but the place for what? The question mark contains an infinitude of possibilities.
