19 January - 31 March 2019

Sigurður Guðmundsson (b. 1942) studied in Iceland in 1960-63 and then moved to Holland for further studies. He lives and works in Reykjavík, China and Holland. Many, large sculptures by him can be found in public spaces in the Nordic Countries and Central Europe. Sigurður has won many competitions, including a competition for an outdoor artwork by the Children’s Hospital, and for outdoor artwork to mark the turn of the century in Reykjavík.

When asked about the ideas behind his works, he answers: “There is no idea behind the artwork – I try not to work with ideas.” However, his career is based on conceptual art, with focus on language, ideas and concepts. He used various media; photos, sculpture, drawings, graphic art and performances, and has also composed music and written books.
