Overview

Working in the medium of embroidery on burlap canvas, Loji Höskuldsson (b. 1987, Reykjavik) is methodical and precise in his act of making, with each work stitched by hand in his Reykjavík studio. Often infused with whimsy, his works function as sociological studies of both commerce and local comforts, frequently featuring Nordic brand packaging and nostalgic hints of recognisable objects.

While the act of embroidery is a meditative one for Höskuldsson, the resulting works are infused with a spirited energy due to their bright palettes and inclusion of local products. Within his canvases, floral imagery can be interspersed with quotidian items including sweet treats, watering cans, drinking glasses, and familiar foods. Höskuldsson’s works range from small to very large scale, and he has collaborated on functional object projects, including a limited-edition sofa design with the Danish brand HAY.
